As an artist and fashion designer, I had spent years honing my craft, but I felt unfulfilled. I decided to take the leap and transition to UX Design (UXUI). Here, I share my personal reasons and reflections on the transition.
As an artist and fashion designer, I initially faced several strong objections:
Time, Money, and Effort. My initial investment in time, money, and effort was too high to consider starting over from scratch. I had spent years studying fine arts and fashion, and it had cost me a significant amount of money.
I had built a successful career in fashion, working with renowned designers and earning a reputation for my creativity. However, I felt stifled by the limitations of the industry.
Fear of Failure due to Age; I was worried about my age not being in my 20s anymore. I feared that taking a leap of faith into UX Design would be too challenging for me, given my less energy and considerable more to lose.
Despite my success, I was unhappy with certain aspects of my career:
Argentine Fashion Industry Crisis The fashion industry in Argentina was facing a crisis, with many designers struggling to make a living. As a freelancer, I often had to take on low-paying projects just to survive.
Badly Paid as a Freelancer As a freelancer fashion designer and owner of my own brand, I worked mostly by myself with little feedback from customers. I often had to sacrifice my time and energy for little financial reward.
Working for a Brazilian Brand I worked for a Brazilian brand, which required me to learn a lot about the country and culture to design for their consumers. This was a challenging but rewarding experience.
Difficulty Finding Feedback as an Artist As an artist, it was hard to find feedback after finishing university. The fine arts market is a niche for people with a lot of contacts, making it difficult for new artists to break into the industry.
As an artist, I often felt undervalued and undercompensated for my work. This lack of recognition and compensation made it difficult for me to continue pursuing my passion.
I felt that my creative growth was limited as an artist and fashion designer. I wanted to explore new challenges and opportunities for growth.
Transitioning careers can be scary and intimidating. However, if we’re unhappy, we must act and be true to ourselves. I hope my story can inspire others considering a similar switch.
In the next article, I will share my personal journey as a UX Designer and how I’ve found fulfillment in this new field.
